After 16 soccer balls packed with opium were found in his truck, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, was arrested by the Brazilian police force late last night.
An anonymous report of suspicious people loading soccer balls into the mayor’s truck, the brought police to investigate. They immediately discovered the 16 soccer balls, which gave off an extremely strong stench of opium. The reported people loading soccer balls into the truck were nowhere to be seen when the police arrived, but witnesses have described them as wearing Chinese sports jerseys.
“This is outrageous- I’ve had nothing to do with this,” Paes managed to tell a few reporters who were able to catch the mayor as he was being handcuffed by the police.
Eduardo Paes has already been subject to sinking approval ratings and criticism from the opposition group Ordem do Progresso for his corruption and inaction regarding the poor. Former president Fernando Cardoso calls Paes’ arrest “the end of his sad career, and further proof that he is nothing but a criminal.”
Further investigation is being conducted into this drug scandal, and Paes’ truck has been confiscated as evidence.
