As the Rio Summer Olympics continue to shock the world with devastating freak accidents, terrorist acts, and further mayhem, a protest of over 200,000 people has developed outside of the Legislative Assembly.
Federal Prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol and many other key figures in the Ordem do Progresso are currently leading the protest, and once again it was remarkably peaceful despite the large numbers. However traffic was backed up for multiple blocks around the Legislative Assembly building, and the Brazilian police that crowded around the protesters were tense. Many protesters voiced growing anxiety about the police.
With extensive media coverage and cameras looking on, Dallagnol gave a rousing speech to the thousands and thousands of masses. The speech was eloquent, and drove the protesters into a deafening frenzy of roars and chants.
“We are students. We are residents of the favelas. We are environmentalists, teachers, fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers,” Dallagnol projected to the crowd. “We all have different stories be we are here for one reason: to end the corruption.” The speech was broadcast live across the entire world as Dallagnol spoke from the front of the Assembly building.
“With Deltan leading us I know we can bring about the change Brazil needs,” one protester said.
Dallagnol has clearly unified the movement behind the ideals of the Ordem do Progresso. In the face of a highly criticized and corrupted government, poverty, and further outrages against the Brazilian people, time will tell how long he can keep the growing number of supporters peaceful.
Incidentally, the Legislative Assembly building has been occupied for about a week now by these protesters, and the Rio de Janeiro municipal government has come to a grinding halt. No action has yet been taken about this.
