The Gaurdian
Every four years leaders, presidents, prime ministers, and various diplomats make their way to the Summer Olympic Games. This year was no different, as the President of the United States and his beautiful family all convened in Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic Games. These types of events are compulsory for the first family, and usually result in a number of adorable videos of our finest American family, but this year was slightly different.
The first daughter - Sasha Obama - recently incurred controversy when speaking privately to her sister at the Opening Ceremonies last week. As the cameras for a number of American broadcasting networks circled the stadium they settled on the first sisters for a brief five seconds. This five second insight into their conversation revealed a snippet of the youngest Obama’s mind. Broadcast on millions of American television's, many heard Sasha say “funny if there was a bomb,” with the two giggling after her seemingly odd outburst.
Since that fateful moment, Sasha’s life has been a veritable bomb frenzy, and American media has referred to the moment as ‘the bomb heard round the world’.
Many political commentators are calling for President Obama’s resignation, believing that if this is how his daughter views senseless violence, he has no right to be the president of a nation sensitive to such acts.
Her outburst has also spurred old rumors of President Obama’s nationality and has since lead to an impeachment campaign that is gaining support on both sides of the aisle.
Sasha, a 14 year old freshman in high school, has refused to comment on the situation. Her father has been concerned with the threats of terrorist acts to American athletes prevalent in the Rio Games to comment on his daughters’ misstep on the international stage.
Currently, calls for Obama’s impeachment are as loud as “the bomb heard round the world”, and it is unclear how long the President can avoid the subject before addressing it head on. Like Brazil, America may be heading for an impeachment of his own if this “bomb” is not diffused quickly.
