A bomb has detonated this morning in Rocinha, the largest of Rio’s favelas. Reports of injuries or suspects have yet been confirmed.
The bomb exploded in an abandoned alleyway in the southern segment of Rocinha, a neighbourhood heavily populated with young families. This has caused concern for a potential increase of security threats against civilians, especially children.
Current UPP investigation has reported the bomb was relatively large and intricate in regards to resources usually available to activists or street gangs, suggesting the source having closer ties with armed organizations with the accessible endowments. Further, the examination of the surrounding debris has uncovered remnants of a soccer ball, in which evidence suggests that the bomb was hidden.
The ODP has come into question as the possible culprit of this incident, but considering that the the favela is the supposed residence to many of the ODP’s supporters and participants and that the nature of the bombing belies the ODP’s habitual patterns of threat, the plausibility of their involvement is small.
The authorities’ inadequacies in disclosing those to blame have caused immense civilian anxiety and have heightened an already increasing distrust between the public and government.
