During a press conference held after they regained consciousness, the Chinese archer Xiaoxiang gave Venezuelan archer Malavé a Jennifer Lawrence signed copy of the popular trilogy The Hunger Games (in Bluray and DVD).

At the start of the games Malavé was hospitalized after sustaining an injury to the shoulder from Xiaoxiang’s arrow. This accident is said to have been caused by severe winds that disrupted the arrow’s flight. In another unfortunate turn, Xiaoxiang was hospitalized after a car accident on his way to visit Malavé in the hospital.

This postponed the initial press conference between the two unlucky athletes, but it has finally happened. The Chief Commercial Officer of the IOC pushed for Xiaoxiang to give this gift to Malavé as a sign of good will. When asked whether he had anything to comment about the matter, Xiaoxiang, heavily bandaged, gave a guttural moan.

As he has not sustained any head injuries, Malavé’s was much more lucid during the conference. “I am glad for the Hunger Games gift,” he said. “However I am very disappointed not to be able to compete, even in such a ****show as these games are turning out to be.”

This conference and gift giving was conducted in an attempt to alleviate the conflict that has been building between China and Venezuela, but whether or not it will have any real impact on their contentious relationship has yet to be determined.

It is still unknown how long Xiaoxiang will have to be hospitalized, but Malavé said he should be released in a few days. Both athletes will not be able to participate in any further competitions in the games.
