O Globo
In a recent interview with opposition party leader Aecio Neves da Cunha, the political giant offered some sage insights into the realities of the new Temer administration.
Michel Temer, foisted into office following the impeachment of former Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, may be less corrupt than his fallen counterpart, but he is no less innocent of attempting to eradicate the burgeoning movement’s support.
"Temer's abuse of his powers to intimidate his fellow statesmen like me is distressing,” Mr. Neves began. “Even worse is the fact that he is willing to betray Brazilians in general by calling their peaceful protests a threat and mobilize security forces against them.”
Mr. Neves further promised monetary support to combat the corruption issues caused by President Temer. His hope is that increased transparency within the government will lead the Brazilian people to refuse to accept the corruption previously so present within their politics.
"To show my commitment against corruption, I have opened up financial reports to the public,” Neves assured. “I am donating a large sum ($5R million) to PACO, the People Against Corruption Organization, to fund their anti-corruption campaigns.”
Neves has a long history with the fight against corruption, and in his view, there is only one way to solve the problem found within the Brazilian government.
"I demand that Acting President Temer resign. His administration has been tied to violence and the suppression of free speech”
Neves also accused Temer of producing a falsified video in which a terrorist attempts “to smear the name of [Neves’] movement for freedom and democracy.”
Nearing the end of our interview together, Neves addressed the president directly, “Michel Temer, you are ineligible to remain in office for your corruption. Step aside and allow Congress to pass a law calling for an immediate election."
Although Neves’ ways may seem extreme, his goals are clear as day, “democracy is dead in Brazil for as long as this corrupt government is in power,” Neves finished resolutely.
