An explosion at the João Havelange Stadium during athletics competitions in the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics has shook the Brazilian city, grinding multiple Olympic events to a halt and immediately overshadowing the Olympic competitions throughout the city.
The explosion occurred during track 100 metre finals, and was large enough to be felt for blocks around the stadium.
“I saw the flash and I was thrown out of my seat” said Aleyev Zhakarova.
“I couldn’t hear but there was smoke everywhere, and I think I saw a body on the field.”
Preliminary reports suggest that at least 25 people, including athletes, have been wounded, and there has been at least one death.
Paramedics on the field said that more deaths were likely.
The racers on the track at the time included multiple Russian track athletes and at least one German athlete.
Security forces took steps to lock down multiple locations around Rio de Janeiro, including Maracana stadium, where the leaders of Germany, China, Venezuela, and Russia are currently watching the games.
