Spirits high with anticipation and fervor, athletes, distinguished global figures, and spectators have come together at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium to participate in the opening ceremony. The grandiose celebration includes an extravagant showcase of Brazil’s Samba de Roda and performances by the treasured Shakira, whose supposed wardrobe malfunction has yet to be a distraction to the crowd’s satisfaction with the ceremony.
Rio’s defense minister, Raul Junhmann, assures correspondents that security is a top priority, and the ceremonies have so far commenced safely and peacefully. Despite budget cuts, Rio has deployed 85,000 soldiers and police to ensure security for the games, which is twice as much as London organized in 2012. The climate in Rio de Janeiro is tense in the face of mass protests that have accompanied the ceremonies, and in light of this the large amount of soldiers and police seems appropriate.
