Chinese Archer Sends Venezuelan to Hospital

AVN

The qualification rounds for Men’s individual event saw itself in the cneter of the competition with Venezuela’s Elías Malavé and China’s Dai Xiaoxiang head to head for the win when winds perturbed Dai’s second round in the 30m. These strong winds caused Xiaxiang’s arrow to fly in the wrong direction and land in Malavé’s shoulder.

China’s top archer, Xiaoxiang, who won bronze in the 2012 summer olympics, was faced with a longtime rival, Malavé from Venezuela. There has long been contention between these two athletes since Xiaoxiang stole the bronze medal from Malavé four years earlier, and tensions were high as the competition started. However, no one expected the event to end in such disaster. Malave was the clear favorite amongst the audience in the arena.

“I don’t know what happened” a distressed Xiaoxiang tells reporters, as Malavé is carried into an ambulance behind him. “I really hope he’s ok.”

The archery competitions are being halted in the wake of these events, and it is unknown whether or not they will continue.
